"There's no way he can say no to you." Paula looked over Elizabeth's dress with a smile, and the girl spun around once, admiring it as well.

"Thank you, Paula! It's adorable!" She posed a few times in the mirror.

Paula cocked her head to one side. "You look so cute when you do that." They both giggled.

"Well, next weekend is Homecoming," Lizzy said happily, her eyes gleaming. "I have to ask him tonight!"

Paula smiled widely. "I'm sure you two will be the cutest couple at the dance!"

Elizabeth smiled, her green eyes shining. "I hope he says yes!"

Paula shrugged, adjusting the strap on Elizabeth's arm. "He can't say no to you," she repeated. Her hands stopped moving for a moment, and she looked at the ground, turning a light shade of red as her entire face heated up.

"Yeah," Lizzy chirped, turning her head. "I hope he -- hey, Paula, what's wrong?"

Paula looked up at her, forcing a smile and a laugh. "Nothing, sorry. I just had a bad thought."

Elizabeth nodded. "I understand. Come on now," she called, leaping off of the platform she had been standing on. "We have to go back to my place and prepare for when I ask him tonight!"

Paula smirked. "It's only Wednesday," she pointed out. "The dance is next Saturday. Don't you want to wait a little bit?"

Lizzy giggled. "No way! I have to get to him before anyone else does!"

Paula nodded. "Right! Can't wait!"

"Gotta give you credit, Shorty," Sebastian muttered, putting his hands behind his head. "You're pretty good at it for a freshman."

Ciel blushed hard. "Shut up," he snapped, pulling the blankets up to cover his face.

Sebastian looked over at him. Ciel had decided to spend two or three weeks rooming with Sebastian, and hadn't bothered to tell his father he was leaving, either. Now, as he lay cuddled against Sebastian's chest, nobody could deny their affection for one another.

"So, the dance next weekend....you still going with me?"

Ciel detected a hint of caution in Sebastian's voice, something he'd never heard before. It was as if he was legitimately scared to lose him. It made him feel good, and he let out a deep sigh.

"Of course," he murmured. "As if anyone else would ask me."

Sebastian used a hand to lift Ciel's chin. "If someone else does ask you, what do you do then, my lord?"

"I tell them I have plans with someone else," Ciel replied.

Sebastian raised a brow. "Hey, Shorty, you gonna tell them who?"

Ciel shrugged. "If it comes to that, then I don't see why not."

There was a knock at the door, and they both glanced up warily. Neither was dressed from the waist up, and it was rather ... hot in the room.

"It's Claude," came a muffled voice from behind the door.

Sebastian let out a shallow breath. "Come in."

Ciel's eyes widened. "Wait, I'm not--!"

Sebastian put a hand over his mouth. Claude Faustus, Sebastian's plaything and friend, opened the door, and immediately chuckled. "I see how it is, Sebastian. You predator."

Sebastian shrugged.

"I came to ask you about the theme for the dace," Claude continued, his voice flat. Ciel wondered briefly if he had any feelings. Any heart. "I'm on the decoration comity, and I need a few votes." He looked at Ciel. "From both you and your half naked lover."

Ciel pulled the blankets over his head in a childish way, both shielding his embarrassment and hiding from Claude.

Sebastian smiled. "Alright, Well, I want the theme to be Casino. Flashy, lots of bright dresses, the works."

Claude raised a suggestive brow. "Casino?" He seemed to actually ponder the idea. "Yes, I suppose that sounds fun. Dice dresses, dice chairs, bar-stools, slot machine stuff..." he wrote down everything as he spoke on the clipboard he had brought with him. "And you, Phantomhive?" He tugged the blanket away from Ciel, who didn't even attempt to hide his exposed chest anymore.

"How about a
Masquerade Ball? Or Fire and Ice? The male could wear ice white, the woman a fiery red."

Sebastian threw a glance at him, and he realized he had said "man and woman."

"Or, or," he stuttered, "the Casino theme sounds good, too."

Claude nodded. "I wrote all of them down," he murmured. "Thank you both. Oh, and Alois was looking for you, Ciel."

Ciel raised a brow. "Are you with Alois?"

Claude's gaze shifted. "I'm leaving," he replied, and left the apartment.

Sebastian looked at him for a moment and muttered, "would you prefer going with a lady?"

Ciel had to think. It would be a bit odd to show up with Sebastian, but he liked him, and he couldn't think of a girl he'd like to take to the dance.

"My lord?"

Ciel's eyes widened. "That's it, Sebastian!" He got up, racing to the door. "Claude!" He scanned the parking lot for Claude, and finally spotted him, near the exit. I caught him just in time. "I know what the theme has to be!"

Claude looked up at him. He made no attempt to yell back, but pulled out his clipboard, watching Ciel intently from the parking lot three floors below.

***

The school bell rang, and Ciel walked down the hall beside Sebastian to first period, feeling a bit excited. It was Thursday, so it was a short day. Normally it was Wednesday that had the short schedule, but in this case, there had been snow days and teacher work days that had been occurred. Conferences were coming up, too.

"Ciel!" Alois motioned for him to sit beside him. "I want to ask you something."

Ciel nodded. "Alright, what is it?"

Alois smiled. "Do you think I should ask Claude to the dance?"

Ciel shrugged. Not only did he not consider Alois a friend, exactly, but he also was bad with these things. So that was not a good mix. "Do what you'd like," he replied. "I don't think he has a date."

Alois put his feet up on the desk. "Yes, but Hannah is determined to keep me away from him." He spun the pencil in his hand, his gaze fixed on the wooden stick in front of him.

Ciel hadn't made it out of the classroom yet when he was hugged and thrown off balance by a blonde friend of his. "Elizabeth? What are you doing on the third floor?"

Lizzy smiled, a light blush tinting her cheeks. "Ciel, I wanted to ask you something."

Ciel nodded, leaning heavily on one side, impatient to get to second period. Now that he looked better at her, she was dressed up really nicely, and she had even worn makeup today.

"Will you go to homecoming with me?"

Ciel's eyes widened. "Oh, Elizabeth, uh..." he looked around uncomfortably. He would hate for Sebastian to walk in right now, but he was nowhere to be seen. Hopefully he went to class. "I already have a date," he said slowly. "I'm going with Sebastian."

Lizzy's eyes were still wide, her smile still big. "Okay," she chirped, her voice cracking as she backed away, her steps quick, almost frantic. "I figured that anyways. I mean, ha, what was I thinking? Stupid Lizzy."

Ciel reached a hand out to her. Even though he knew he liked Sebastian, he couldn't help but feel bad for her. She turned away. "I'll be there with somebody, too, and maybe we can talk."

Ciel opened his mouth to reply, but she hurried down the stairs, leaving Ciel with a tight feeling of guilt in his chest. I like her as a friend, he thought bitterly. Why can't she like me as a friend, too?

Shaking his head, he turned the opposite way, heading down the hallway to his next class. For the rest of the day, he felt bad, as if he had done something wrong..

***

Lizzy picked up her knife, running to her room.

Paula raced after her, reaching for the back of her dress several times. "Come on, please, Elizabeth! I'm sure if he had known you were going to ask him, he wouldn't have agreed to go with Sebastian!"

Lizzy slammed the door in her friend's face, not bothering to lock it, but smiled a little when her friend slammed into it and let out a pained moan.

I've got problems. I've got problems. Talk to someone. This isn't the answer. She took the knife to her wrist, making a horizontal cut. It wasn't terribly deep, but she felt the blood running down her wrist, and cried tears of both satisfaction and pain.

"Elizabeth!" Paula shoved the door open. "Please!" She grabbed both of Elizabeth's wrists -- careful not to grab the wound -- and held them above Lizzy's head, so that they were face to face. "Elizabeth, control yourself!"

Lizzy's eyes widened. "Wh..what?" Elizabeth's grip loosened, and the knife fell to the floor with a loud clang.

Paula's voice had been loud and harsh, but out of concern and fear. She had tears brimming her eyes, just as Elizabeth had. "You're stronger than this," Paula whispered, resting her forehead on Lizzy's. "I know you are. Please, don't do that."

Lizzy felt Paula's hands loosen their grip until Lizzy had control of her arms again. Paula was hugging her now instead, and she suddenly felt guilty. In her rush of anger and sadness, she had resorted to cutting, and she felt like crying.

"I'm fine," Elizabeth reassured her dear friend. "I'm sorry I freaked out like that, I've just never felt so...rejected."

Paula used a hand to gently lift her chin. "I understand." She brushed the bangs away from Lizzy's eyes and muttered, "we can go to the dance together, if you want. There's nothing against going with your best friend."

Elizabeth nodded, her eyes soft with happiness. "Sure, Paula, I'd like that."

Leading her out of the room and to the kitchen, she sat her down at the kitchen table, hurrying to the fridge. "I'm going to make dinner a little early, since your parents aren't home."

Lizzy nodded. "That's fine. You're seventeen, you can cook."

Paula chuckled. "As if."

Lizzy looked up. "What?"

At this, several pans and cooking oils fell to the ground around Paula, and she let out a loud groan.

***

"So, you told her no?" Sebastian kicked off his shoes, closing the door behind them as they entered the apartment.

"Yes," Ciel replied. "It was kind of sad to see her so...upset."

Sebastian pulled out a piece of gum, popping it into his mouth. "I thought you said she was smiling," he pointed out, and Ciel looked at the ground.

"If you had seen the smile, you would have understood."

Sebastian nodded. "Well, I wish I could understand more, Shorty, but I can't. I'm used to seeing broken hearts, though." He brushed himself off, stripping off his coat and asking, "want to go out tonight?"

Ciel shrugged. "If you want to, sure."

Sebastian chuckled. "Would you prefer we stay here and attend more...intimate affairs?"

Ciel blushed hard. "No, a night out sounds perfect. Where should we go?"

Sebastian shrugged, blowing a bubble and then popping it. "How about dinner? That's where couples go, right?"

Ciel glanced over at him. "Couples?" Are we a couple? "Sure, sounds good."

Sebastian spit his gum out, pulling out a joint instead, lighting it with a flick of his lighter.

Ciel's eyes widened. "You smoke?"

Sebastian shrugged. "It soothes me," he replied, blowing out a cloud of smoke. "Want a drag?"

Ciel shook his head. "I'll pass."

Sebastian nodded. "Yes, my lord."

Ciel still wasn't completely used to that name. It was a nickname that he had earned during their role-play sex in a closet at Undertaker's party. Sebastian never seemed to be able to let go of that saying, so Ciel decided to just live with it. I'll get used to it eventually.

"Eventually?" He thought for a moment. What...what do I do after high school? Sebastian is almost four years older than me. He'll have a job and be off to college before I'm even a Senior. How long can we keep this relationship up before something happens that makes us drift apart? What do I do without him?

Admittedly his life had been alright before they'd met. But that was the thing. Now that they'd met, there was no way he could ever cope without him. In the short time that he'd known this guy, he'd practically fallen in love with him.

Love?

I love you. He looked at Sebastian. He was leaned back in his chair, his eyes closed in a relaxed demeanor. I love you. I love you. He opened his mouth, begging for the words to come out, but they simply wouldn't. Instead he made an odd choking noise, and Sebastian glanced at him.

"Shorty? What's up?" Ciel looked him directly in the eyes. "I..."

Say it. Say it.

"...would really like to get some food. Right now."

What?!

Sebastian gave him a concerned look. "Alright, well...I'm up for some food." He finished off the joint, grabbing his coat.

Ciel narrowed his eyes, biting his lip, feeling like smacking himself. What am I going to do? I think I actually love him.
